Why Water Chemistry Matters
Unbalanced water is the leading cause of hot tub problems — from cloudy water and skin irritation to corroded equipment and voided warranties. The good news: once you understand the three core parameters, testing and adjusting takes less than 10 minutes.
The Three Core Parameters
Test these in order — always balance alkalinity first, then pH, then sanitizer.
1. Total Alkalinity (TA)
Alkalinity acts as a buffer that stabilizes your pH so it doesn't swing wildly after you add chemicals or after heavy use.
- Ideal range: 80–120 ppm
- Too low: pH becomes unstable and corrosive. Add an alkalinity increaser. (Beachcomber Resist)
- Too high: pH is locked high and water turns cloudy. Add a pH/alkalinity decreaser (Beachcomber pH Minus or Relent) and run jets to off-gas CO₂.
2. pH
pH measures how acidic or basic your water is. It directly affects sanitizer effectiveness and bather comfort.
- Ideal range: 7.2–7.8
- Too low (acidic): Eye and skin irritation, corroded fittings and jets. Add pH increaser. (Beachcomber pH Plus)
- Too high (basic): Cloudy water, scale buildup, reduced sanitizer effectiveness. Add pH decreaser. (Beachcomber pH Minus)
3. Sanitizer (Chlorine or Bromine)
Sanitizer kills bacteria and keeps water safe. Without adequate sanitizer, even perfectly balanced water is unsafe.
- Chlorine ideal range: 3–5 ppm
- Bromine ideal range: 3–5 ppm
- Too low: Bacteria and algae risk. Shock the spa and add sanitizer. (Beachcomber Chlor Blast, Care Free Boost or Bromo Blast). *Tip: Our Beachcomber sanitizer products also contain shock.
- Too high: Skin and eye irritation. Remove the cover and let levels drop naturally.
Step-by-Step Balancing Routine
- Test your water using a quality test strip or liquid test kit. Test at least 2–3 times per week, or after heavy use.
- Adjust Total Alkalinity first. Make small adjustments and retest after 4–6 hours with jets running.
- Adjust pH. Add increaser or decreaser in small doses. Retest after 30 minutes with jets running.
- Add sanitizer to bring levels into range. Run jets for 15 minutes with the cover off.
- Shock weekly (or after heavy use) to oxidize contaminants and refresh the sanitizer.

- Test water before and after adding any chemical — never dose blindly.
- Add only one chemical at a time, with jets running. Wait and retest before adding another.
- Rinse the test strips cap or test kit cell with spa water before testing for accurate readings.
